A glimpse of rural Rajasthan

'Padharo mhare desh' - We have been exposed to various glimpses of Rajasthan tourism through the media. The forts, palaces, sand dunes, the ghumar dance, sweets, rich tradtitonal crafts and costumes etc. How about looking at a different perspective? Rural Rajasthan. Haven't we all heard, 'India lives in villages' ? Rajasthan is my native state but like most Mumbaiites or should I say urbanites, I have been exposed to Rajasthan only as a tourist or wildlife enthusiast and have seen the popular glimpses as depicted in the media. This time my journey to Rajasthan in search of the elusive and magnificient bird, the Lesser florican, took me to rural Rajasthan. I have often written on my wildlife sojourns across India, but this time I feel like sharing the story of the rural life that I saw, as we travelled through fields in search of our bird. Andamans: 20th Dec 2007 to 6th Jan 2008

A camp to Andamans was conducted by SPROUTS from 20th Dec 2007 to 6th Jan 2008. We were 11 of us, right from a 10 year old to 60 year olds, people from diverse backgrounds & varied interests, but all sharing one common love - NATURE. We flew from Mumbai to Chennai, spent a day there & then flew out to Port Blair. The tour lasted 18 days in all. In the 18 days' tour, we covered as much as we could- North Andamans, Middle Andamans & Little Andaman. The Andaman & Nicobar are an archipelago of 572 islands of which 36 are inhabited. They are known for thei tropical rainforests. Forest types include tropical evergreen, moist deciduous, littoral & mangrove forests. Geographic isolation has resulted in a high degree of endemism i.e. speices of biodiversity which can only be found here. URAN, the lost wetland: Our crusade to save it

Does your heart wrench, when you see the 2 collages below? This is the saga of this paradise - the Uran wetlands, that we lost in 2010, to human greed. Uran wetlands were home to around 200 species, including migratory birds. Not less than an estimated 75 species would  breed there. First breeding records of several bird species had been found at Uran eg the black breasted weaver birds, a species which was found breeding in the region after 52 yrs. Several of the IUCN Red Data status birds would regularly winter here. eg. the lesser flamingos, black tailed godwit, painted storks, oriental white ibis etc. It was a wintering area for many other bird species, including several Critically Endangered, Vulnerable and Near-threatened species.  Many bird ringing studies have been conducted by senior ornithologists here.
